Speaking at the Newspaper Library at Colindale, Minister for the Arts, Alan Howarth MP, said: "The project is really impressive. I hope that partnership funding can be secured so it can move on to the next stage of ensuring that these historic newspapers are microfilmed and their contents be made accessible to more readers than ever before".

David Bradbury, Director General, Collections and Services at the British Library, said: "The British Library's support for NEWSPLAN has been maintained since its inception in the early 1980s and is an excellent example of co-operation between the UK public library network and the three UK national libraries."

Dr Ann Matheson, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the NEWSPLAN 2000 Project, said: "The Project's primary aim is to preserve one of the UK's priceless historical assets - its local newspapers - and to ensure that every citizen can have better access to this important part of our historical record."
